The opening of the stadium took place on August 14th of 2008; it performed an opening ceremony on August 16, 2008. It replaces the RCA Dome, built in 1983 as the country home of the Indianapolis Colts of the NFL. Besides the stadium, a new skyscraper and a JW Marriott Indianapolis hotel is built as part of the great expansion of Indiana Convention Center.
