Settlement Offers by Private Investigator Insurance

Hi everyone. I received interesting news from my private investigator insurance company today. I have a pending lawsuit against my liability insurance, and after speaking to the claims representative, it appears that the insurance company may decide to settle the claim. If I had not have called and started asking specific questions, I am not sure they would have told me that a settlement offer was on the table. Can an insurance company decide to settle a claim without my consent? Don’t they at least need to consult with me about it prior to offering that settlement? I hope someone will reply with some good news. Thanks.
